NanoDynamics Energy is developing portable solid oxide fuel cell systems that provide long lasting power in less volume and at a lighter weight than batteries or other fuel cell approaches. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) differ from the more common proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells in that SOFCs can operate on hydrocarbon fuels rather than pure hydrogen, thus eliminating the biggest single hurdle to the implementation of fuel cell power - hydrogen generation, delivery, and storage. The SOFC creates electricity through electrochemical reactions and creates only water vapor and carbon dioxide as its byproducts. The NDRevolution® 50 for example, is fueled by propane contained in disposable cylinders available at many retailers including national home improvement centers.
